Recent news of possible vaccinations coming earlier than expected are a definite plus. If we all follow CDC guidelines and flatten the curve of new cases again, we should be in good shape. In an effort to make sure everyone can harness all that the event will offer, we will host virtual training sessions as well as provide video support on how best to utilize our new platform.Īre you hopeful Surf Expo can be held in-person in January? The biggest challenge in rolling out a new virtual marketplace is educating both brands and attendees about the functionality of the system. Additionally we will provide online education sessions, awards ceremonies and support our non-profit partners. Our virtual event will allow brands to tell their brand stories through images and videos, post catalogs, highlight new products, feature show specials, schedule meetings, chat in real time and offer video meetings or sessions. We look forward to being able to provide a virtual connection for brands and buyers in September. Our first virtual event, Outdoor Retailer Online, staged successfully last week. Our parent company, Emerald, has invested heavily in virtual show technology. Roy Turner: Surf Expo Connect, our virtual show, will launch this week. Will Surf Expo launch a virtual show? If so, what are the opportunities with virtual that aren’t available with live events? What are the challenges? Surveys and conversations showed that retailers would support a virtual platform should the face-to-face event be cancelled.Īt the end of the day, we all want business to return to normal. But we’re also cautious with recent rises in COVID cases across the country. Retailers are looking for merchandise and many retailers as well as brands were hoping that we could hold our event in Orlando. Even still, we found support from many retailers who wanted to attend in spite of restrictions and possible quarantine. However, many Surf Expo supporters have been placed under quarantine restrictions if they travel from the state of Florida or in the case of our international attendees, have been banned from travelling to the U.S. That said, many key brands and retailers had committed to attending our September event. Roy Turner: Obviously there has been a concern for months coming from both attendees and our brands, with many limiting business travel during the pandemic. What kind of feedback were you hearing from brands and retailers? While we feel we can host shows in a controlled environment, concerns over the recent upsurge in Florida cases helped us come to our decision to transition our event from face-to-face to virtual. The safety of our customers, attendees, staff and teams that put our event together were front of mind in our decision. Our timing comes in advance of several key deadlines for our exhibiting companies and before travel arrangement need to be made. Roy Turner: Our decision to cancel our September show was based on the current state of COVID-19 cases in Florida, which continue to be some of the highest in the country at this time. Why did you finally make the call to cancel? Roy Turner, SVP of Emerald and Surf Expo Show Director, answered some questions for us about the changes. Instead, Surf Expo will host a new virtual event to connect buyers and brands. Surf Expo is cancelling the upcoming September trade show in Orlando due to the spike in cases in Florida. And since we’ve already factored in inflation, theoretically you could go on like this forever: with a million bucks in the bank, RM 2.9K to spend every month, and never having to set an alarm clock again. You’re living purely on dividends and interest - truly passive income. The interesting thing: if your expenses never exceed RM 2,917 a month, you never touch your capital of RM 1,000,000. Assuming you’re not the type who eats lobsters for lunch, livable income for a lot of people. Your passive income = RM 35,000 per year RM 2,917 per month. Obviously not enough for anyone to retire on.īut let’s say you’ve saved RM 1,000,000 and again get inflation-adjusted returns of 3.5% per year. So for example, if you have RM 100,000 of investments, and get steady returns of 3.5% per year ( EPF-like returns minus inflation), that would mean your passive income = RM 3,500 per year RM 292 per month. Your passive income is more than your expenses How Much Money Do You Actually Need to Retire? How to get there? Let’s dive into the math.Ģ. The FIRE movement taught me you could actually FIRE your boss much earlier in life. I always assumed that everyone needs to work till they have white hair and back problems. What really blew my mind about FIRE was philosophically it had never registered in my mind that people could retire young. Do it when you’re in your 30s, and you can get featured on CNBC. Money, the cooler it is, because obviously who wants to say F U to their job only when they’re 60? Get there by 45, and it’s a pretty sweet life. Here’s seven things I think you would benefit from knowing too.įinancial Independence (FI) is this cool concept where you have enough money invested, that you don’t actually need to work anymore.Ī cruder way of calling it is having “F.U. And while I wouldn’t consider myself a FIRE advocate today (I’ll probably never retire myself), I’ve continued to learn from the FIRE movement over the years. From that point onward, I viewed my money and career choices in a totally different light. One MMM article I’ll always remember is “ The Shockingly Simple Math Behind Early Retirement.” “What, I don’t actually have to work until I’m 60? I can have this dream life where I’m still young, and do whatever the fuck I want till I’m gone?” It’s a growing group of enthusiasts all over the world who aspire to retire early, by saving and investing large amounts of their incomes. Money Mustache (MMM) is also widely seen as a leading figure of the Financial Independence Retire Early (FIRE) movement. In quite a few ways, he inspired me to write mine. Since then, he’s raised a son, worked on projects purely out of interest, donated hundreds of thousands to charity, and written a world-famous blog. Financially independent - he would never have to work another day in his life. In 2005, Pete Adeney, a 30-year old engineer retired from his day job. Calcifer makes a deal with Sophie, agreeing to break her curse if she breaks his link with Howl. She subsequently meets Howl's young apprentice Markl and a fire demon named Calcifer, the source of the castle's magic and movement. He leads her to Howl's moving castle where she enters without invitation. She meets a living scarecrow, whom she calls "Turnip Head". Seeking to break the curse, Sophie leaves home and sets off through the countryside. Upon returning home, she meets the Witch of the Waste, who transforms her into a 90-year-old woman. Sophie, a young milliner and eldest of three sisters, encounters a wizard named Howl on her way to visit her sister Lettie. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 78th Academy Awards, but lost to Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, in 2006, and won several other awards, including four Tokyo Anime Awards and a Nebula Award for Best Script. The film received critical acclaim, with particular praise toward its visuals and Miyazaki's presentation of the themes. It went on to gross $190 million in Japan and $236 million worldwide, making it one of the most commercially successful Japanese films in history. Howl's Moving Castle premiered at the 61st Venice International Film Festival on 5 September 2004, and was theatrically released in Japan on 20 November 2004. In 2013, Miyazaki said Howl's Moving Castle was his favorite creation, explaining, "I wanted to convey the message that life is worth living, and I don't think that's changed." The film is significantly thematically different from the novel while the novel focuses on challenging class and gender norms, the film focuses on love, personal loyalty and the destructive effects of war. The film contains feminist elements as well, and carries messages about the value of compassion. It also explores the theme of old age, depicting age positively as something which grants the protagonist freedom. Miyazaki stated that he "had a great deal of rage" about the Iraq war, which led him to make a film which he felt would be poorly received in the United States. Influenced by Miyazaki's opposition to the United States' invasion of Iraq in 2003, the film contains strong anti-war themes. She encounters a wizard named Howl and gets caught up in his resistance to fighting for the king. It tells the story of Sophie, a young milliner who is turned into an elderly woman by a witch who enters her shop and curses her. The film is set in a fictional kingdom where both magic and early twentieth-century technology are prevalent, against the backdrop of a war with another kingdom. The Japanese voice cast featured Chieko Baisho and Takuya Kimura, while the English dub version starred Jean Simmons, Emily Mortimer, Lauren Bacall, Christian Bale, Josh Hutcherson and Billy Crystal. The film was produced by Toshio Suzuki, animated by Studio Ghibli and distributed by Toho. It is loosely based on the 1986 novel of the same name by British author Diana Wynne Jones. Howl's Moving Castle ( Japanese: ハウルの動く城, Hepburn: Hauru no Ugoku Shiro) is a 2004 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Every time I go here (for the movies, of course) I make sure to see if the place has finally hit 100% occupancy, and never once over the past four years has it been over even 75%. Overall it seems that Atlas Park may never get off the ground. Perhaps a billboard on Woodhaven could draw potential customers, but management has never yet tried such a thing. However, not once, except when the mall first opened, did I see any sort of advertizing for Atlas Park. Even if the mall had a decent layout and store selection, competition is already high: Atlas Park has to draw shoppers away from the tremendously popular Queens Center and Queens Place malls. In fact the only building that constantly receives foot traffic is the South building, which incidentally houses Regal Cinemas and Stein Mart. (For an outdoor “lifestyle center,” this place has a very weird layout for example there's a basement tunnel out of the main garage into the North Building that has never been opened, creating an underground dead end there). One whole two-floor section of the East (Border's) building was never tenanted, as well as the the basement and second floors of the North building. Adding to this problem is the mall's vacancy rate, which was high from the very beginning. Over the past four years a few of those boutiques have pulled out, including the Amish Market. The other two reasons why Atlas Park didn't even start well are the high-end selection of stores the mall offers and the management's failure to mitigate that issue. Even if they did, Roosevelt Field or even Queens Center are much better places for shopping, even on accessibility alone. I doubt the upscale suburbia of Long Island, which probably would have enjoyed shopping here had it been more accessible, hasn't even heard of this place. With such a terrible location and not really any opportunity for local shoppers, this mall was strained from the start. The NYC Subway System has no stops within reasonable distance only local bus routes serve the mall. Queens Boulevard is nowhere nearby, as well as any interstate or expressway. Woodhaven Boulevard is the nearest road that fits such a description, but is nearly always bogged down with traffic. It's area is at best middle class (recall that this place is particularly more upscale), and it not really located near any major highway. Atlas Park Mall is located in the midst of a low-density residential neighborhood, to the southwest of a large cemetery. There are several reasons as to why I say this place never started well at all. The “anchors,” or rather the only successfully attractive stores of the center, are Borders, Stein Mart, and Regal Cinemas. Stores/restaurants included Coldwater Creek, Chico's, California Pizza Kitchen, Johnny Rockets, Chili's, Borders, Stein Mart, Amish Market, New York Sports Clubs, White House Black Market, and a few other local, privately owned entries. The center was loaded with an odd array of stores, most high end, some not, and also features several restaurants along with a brand new Regal Cinemas. At it's opening in April 2006, the center consisted of four retail buildings, one office building, and two parking garages. The long dormant buildings of the center, located in the middle of Queens, the most populous borough of New York City, were extensively renovated into an indoor/outdoor retail and entertainment center by Atco Properties. The Atlas Park Mall was built upon the site of the former Atlas Terminals Industrial Park, which at one time housed brands like GE and Westinghouse. While this place is a quasi-lifestyle enter, personally I feel it was never really alive at all. The Shops at Atlas Park, a.k.a Atlas Park Mall, is quite possibly the youngest dead mall to be submitted to Deadmalls. Steven Resch's Commentary User submitted July 7, 2010 I rarely go shopping here because like I said, full retail price but if you're looking to splurge, this is a good spot especially if you're looking for new sneakers.ATLAS PARK MALL / THE SHOPS AT ATLAS PARK: GLENDALE (NEAR NEW YORK), NY The sushi restaurant there has superb sushi and the servers have been there a while so they will get to know you if you go often. Cold Stone also has rewards so we like to go there as a treat. There is a Regal movie theater there so if you have a rewards card the price is worth it. The prices are full retail price (no discounts, basically) although there is a 5 Below which I absolutely love (think boxes of candy for $1 each!). Once my family and I heard about this place back in the early '00s we were hooked! A mall that's nearby where we can hangout, eat ice cream and watch movies?! Yes, please! They have added more things to do/shops over the years because it definitely seems more lively than ever before. First of all, it's Atlas Park with an 'a' not an 'i'! Some of the reruns of classic radio shows of the 30s, 40s, and 50s were entertaining, too ("The Jack Benny Program," "You Bet Your Life"). "My Word" was an interesting and entertaining game show, but that was on WGUC, iirc. I miss some of the nonmusical shows on local public radio too, especially "Bob and Ray." Those guys were the GrandMasters of deadpan. Now, there are commercials, as well as news, sports, and weather on those RTÉ Radio Stations so, there are stretches of talk with no music, sometimes for several minutes, but here's a link, anyway: With the time difference between Cincinnati and Ireland, and especially with on demand streaming available, you don't have to stay up all night to hear it i especially enjoy "Late Date" while i am driving alone. The songs aren't sped up or chopped off at the end, there's no wannabe comedians laughing at their own inanity, just a sensible host with a pleasant voice who entertains and informs. On RTÉ Radio 1, "Late Date" is hosted almost exclusively in English, and plays a fair share of rock, but with deeper album cuts, and other genres - it's not exclusively rock, nor is the rock always the same variety there is a mixture of styles and genres, and the show is laid back: the DJs are actually human, knowledgeable, informative, and entertaining. RTÉ Channel 3, RnaG, broadcasts in the Irish language, and offers several shows featuring traditional Irish music. If you are into streaming, i believe WEFT out of Champaign, Illinois is available, and has many musical choices, and - this might be a surprise, but - RTÉ Radio out of Ireland offers some musical programming that never fails me. I'm guessing WOBO is still around, but i haven't been out that way in awhile. You can still find musical variety on other local public radio stations, such as WAIF and WYSO, but depending on your location, the signal might not be as strong. (WOXY 97.7 fm was another wonderful source at the time, with a good variety of musical shows, but of course WOXY was a commercial station.) In the days before the internet (streaming, sampling, videos, downloads, file sharing), those radio shows were one of the main ways we learned about musicians we hadn't heard of, before. I do remember one of the bands - was it The Wolverton Brothers? - did a cover of "Pinball Wizard" in the style of Johnny Cash, to the tune of "Folsom Prison Blues:" go ahead, sing it that way it totally works. I think that one might have been called "Who Cares" as, again, there was a charity involved, but i don't remember. ("Squiddly Niemeyer?" "Tony Rigatoni?" do i have those right?) I think that overnight show also broadcast a couple local events - for charity, if i recall correctly - such as "The Bands Who Fell To Earth," featuring local bands covering David Bowie songs, and i remember another broadcast concert featuring local bands doing The Who covers. I enjoyed the youthful humor of the hosts of those overnight shows - college kids, i suppose - and the characters they created. I also used to listen to the alternative rock on WVXU overnight. I did not dislike "Echoes," but it was rare that i was in the mood for it, i do not think i ever listened to an episode all the way through, and i cannot honestly say i'm going to miss "Echoes," but there are other musical shows i miss that used to air on WVXU, WMUB, and WGUC, such as the straight-ahead jazz on WVXU (and "Jazz With OT" on WGUC), "The Blues with Lee Hay" (and her remarkable voice), "The Thistle and Shamrock" (Celtic music), and the overnight musical shows that played in the mid to late 1980s, i want to say (?), such as "Oldies Overnight," which was also a hilarious name for a show (as if the songs they played became oldies overnight). I'm sure i am about to ramble like a reminiscing old man, but here goes. Meanwhile great music is a-plenty on its sister station classical WGUC and its 2 additional HD channels, featuring jazz on 90.0 HD-2 and Cincinnati indie Inhailer radio on 90.9 HD-3. I totally get it that as a public radio station, WVXU's programming evolves over time. That show also had been running for, literally, decades, and it will NOT move to a different platform. I have to say, it is hard to imagine that this show will never air again on VXU (Echoes remains available on-line and in the app, but frankly that's not quite the same for me).Īlso gone is Swing with Bill Cartwright. Last night (Friday) was the very last time that the long-standing show Echoes aired. In case you hadn't heard: WVXU is dropping its last few remaining music shows and as of Monday August 16, it is going all talk all the time. Sync it in your local area network instead automatically, if you come home. Syncing files into the cloud makes no sense at all, only for teams, but this is usually not the case with icloud. You can instead install a little script on a cheap php hosting server and sync your contacts and dates with that (e.g. Those are completely insecure intentionally by design. This is my advice, if you want to take your privacy seriously: Do not use cloud services by Apple, Microsoft or Google in any case. EU and national laws do nothing against it, as always the biggest portemonnaie will make the laws instead. Do you know those Apple admins in person? Do you really want to trust unknown persons? This all makes no sense at all. You probably would never know that your data was hacked and used. This is not only a very comfortable open gate for secret services like nsa, but also imagine if icloud was hacked. Not a single average mac user knows that his movements are tracked and uploaded to icloud by default, most people do not realize that the whole keychain will be uploaded, too, with all your passwords. I think not even Windows runs like 400 background services.Īlso it is not at all respecting neither privacy nor constitution laws. Instead constantly adding more and more bloatware and surveillance services to macos just like Microsoft, they really should rethink their strategy and macos better again. Same goes for, only needs to stay activated, because otherwise the disk utility refuses to apply changes to your drives, due a crytic error “cannot access findmymac”. Also seems to prove the low quality assurance in Apple macos and poor testing practice at Apple… Kind of annoying that Apple never tested how the system works if Bird is disabled. If you want to disable icloud, Apple Bird only needs to be activated to get rid of a warning requester, which appears all the time if you file requester your drive. Didn’t dive into that, but it seems to be a very powerful command now. Launchctl also seems to be able to disable services and XPCs from apps. # prevent diskutility warning '' \įor daemon in launchctl bootout system/$ # To revert, delete /private/var/db// ist and and reboot #Modifications are written in /private/var/db// ist, #Disabling SIP is required ("csrutil disable" from Terminal in Recovery) #Disabling unwanted services on macOS 13 Ventura #Credit: Original idea and script disable.sh by pwnsdx Of course you really need to know which services are what for and do research. You need to disable SIP (read script comment). If something does not work as intended, you just have to delete two files in the user space of the drive and reboot. Don’t want your keychain in the cloud available for any unknown body? Disable it. If you don’t use photos or apple music, you can disable those scanning services, too. You can also disable all the surveillance, tracking, online logging, submit-diag stuff by Apple. Also heavily reduces write access to the internal SSD, and therefore increases lifetime (apple ssds are usually produced by the usual suspects, samsung, toshiba etc, and have the same lifespan). For example, if you don’t want to use icloud at all, you can disable most of its services, except apple bird. Twitter feeds in a browser where the videos auto-play as you scroll over them, but play without sound so you have to mute your audio, unmute the video, then restart it to catch whether you missed anything - but if you click wrong it whisks you away to load that tweet in a new page and reloads everything including the video muted again - are the worst of all worlds.Įven as someone who whines a lot about efficiency and waste and bloaty websites, this is still a time I'd rather say "if gif is too big, find a way to make gif smaller, not replace them with a worse experience". Video, video buffering, video with broken skipping, players blocked by ad blockers, players that take ages to load and contact tons of sites, autoplaying video, video which pops out to picture-in-picture and floats over the content, video with adverts interrupting playback, video with overlays interrupting the video, video which stalls midway through, video which breaks if you leave it paused long enough for some session to timeout and it can't resume, video which often re-downloads after skipping back to an already-downloaded section, has been the opposite of a great improvement. I don't love how long it takes to load, but if they were videos I had to click to play, that would be worse.
